Indigenous-Focused & Culturally Responsive Therapy in Calgary

Respectful, Relationship-Centered Mental Health Care

At Brighter Psychology, we recognize that mental health care for Indigenous individuals and families must be grounded in cultural respect, historical awareness, and relational safety.

We are honoured to have an Indigenous Provisional Registered Psychologist on our team, and our clinicians have experience working alongside Indigenous children, youth, adults, and families across diverse communities.

Therapy is not culturally neutral. Historical and ongoing impacts of colonization, residential schools, systemic discrimination, and intergenerational trauma shape lived experience. Effective care must acknowledge this context.

Our commitment is to provide culturally responsive, trauma-informed psychological services in a way that is respectful, collaborative, and grounded in humility.

Culturally Responsive Care

Culturally responsive care includes:

  • Recognizing the impact of intergenerational trauma
  • Understanding systemic barriers to healthcare
  • Respecting community, identity, and cultural values
  • Avoiding pathologizing survival responses
  • Creating space for storytelling and relational process
  • Working collaboratively with families when appropriate

We approach our work with humility and an understanding that learning is ongoing.

Areas of Support

We provide support for:

  • Trauma and intergenerational trauma
  • Grief and loss
  • Identity and cultural connection
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Youth mental health
  • Parenting support
  • Family and relationship challenges
  • Neurodivergence and educational advocacy

Support is individualized and may integrate evidence-based approaches such as CBT, ACT, EMDR, IFS, or family therapy, while remaining culturally attuned.

Intergenerational & Historical Trauma

Many Indigenous individuals carry the effects of:

  • Residential school systems
  • Forced displacement
  • Child welfare involvement
  • Cultural suppression
  • Systemic discrimination

These experiences can shape identity, attachment, and nervous system responses across generations.

Therapy may include trauma-focused treatment, identity exploration, grief processing, and strengthening protective cultural and relational factors.

Healing is relational and contextual.

Working with Children, Youth & Families

We support:

  • Indigenous children navigating school systems
  • Youth managing identity development
  • Families impacted by intergenerational trauma
  • Caregivers seeking culturally responsive support

Family therapy and parent consultation may be integrated when helpful.
